Mentoring and Workshops – Rachel Brencur Photography – Niagara Newborn Photographer

Pailing - BLOG HEADEROne of my favourite things to do is teach. To help others. In this growing industry of photography, specifically newborn and baby portraiture, more and more photographers are emerging which is great. It gives everyone out there different styles and options to choose from. The only downside to this is that many are not educated and unfamiliar with the proper ways to photograph newborns and babies.

Now I’m not talking about “technique” as I’m one to break technique and make it work for me constantly. The main concern with doing things properly is safety. This starts right with the prep for the session, during the session with props and posing, then after the session as well with cleanup, and post processing. Newborn photography creates a lot of illusions using angles and composites and a lot of behind the scene prep work to get that one image, and without knowing this there is a chance that when done improperly injuries can occur.

While many of my clients tell me I make it look easy, I can promise you that newborn photography is not easy. It’s immensely satisfying at the end of it all but it’s stressful, frustrating, and exhausting. But completely worth the reward.

I am proud to offer mentoring and workshops now to teach you the proper and safe way to photograph a newborn. There are 3 options that are available to you all with different benefits to them.

One on One Mentoring

Through this mentoring you will be working one on one with me. We will go over everything from how I set up and prep for a session, important safety tips and techniques, lighting, prop selection and posing, including my own workflow. You will work with me to help pose the baby. After the sessions I will show you how I clean up after a session, and how I post process including watching me edit 3 images. You will be encouraged to bring your camera and take images of each setup that can be used in your portfolio, as well as encouraged to ask questions.

These sessions can be done in your studio, or my studio. Travel fees will apply for any mentoring outside the Niagara Region.

Cost is $900 + hst with 50% due at time of booking as a non-refundable retainer.

Group Workshop

These mentoring sessions are limited to a maximum of 5 attendees dependant on studio space. During this mentoring the attendees will see how I set up for a session, we will discuss safety, lighting and prop selection. You will get to observe my work flow and posing and take images of each final setup which can be used in your portfolio. After the session I will show you how I clean up, as well as how I post process including watching me edit at least one image. You will all be encouraged to ask questions.

These sessions can be done in my studio, or in another arranged “host” studio. Travel fees will apply for any mentoring outside the Niagara Region.

Cost is $700 + hst with 50% due at the time of booking as a non-refundable retainer per attendee. Host (if applicable) will receive a 50% discount.

Petite Mentoring

These mentoring sessions are one on one and a very basic session. During this mentoring you will see how I set up for a session and we will discuss newborn safety and lighting. You will then observe one newborn session in a “fly on the wall” type situation. You are welcome to take notes, however you will not be able to take any images, assist, or ask questions during the session though I will try my best to explain everything I will be doing as I go. After the session I will show you how I clean up and I will happily answer any questions you had about the session. No editing or post processing will be covered in this mentoring session.

These sessions are done only in my studio.

Cost is $500 + hst with 50% due at the time of booking as a non-refundable retainer.

I primarily work with natural light, however I do occasionally utilize studio lighting, so I am happy and confident to mentor in either scenario.

Typical posing that I try to cover in every mentoring session are: bowl posing, bucket posing, flokati/fluff posing, night-night posing, beanbag posing of tushie up, side laying, taco, chin on hands, back, and froggy. I can’t guarantee every baby will do every pose. I do try to complete every pose, but it is dependant on the models we have in. If through every effort baby is not going into a specific pose, I will still show how I pose with a posing doll. For one on one and workshop mentoring I utilize 2 newborns back to back for this reason to have a better chance at getting all poses in. For petite mentoring only one newborn is utilized.

I’m always happy to customize each mentoring session to YOU and your needs. So if there are poses you don’t want me to focus on and instead focus on something else you are having difficulty with i’m happy to do that. On the flip side, if there is something you really want to focus on, don’t hesitate to let me know and we will work on that.
